Residential
Sound Transmission Class and Impact Insulation Class Testing Equipment in Condominium
Noise isolation within multi-family residential buildings is of primary concern for most occupants. In particular, privacy relative to adjacent suites is important for condominium builders and suite owners because of the impact on daily life and resale value of the suite. In addition, there are building code requirements for minimum noise isolation between adjacent suites (side/side or above/below) as well as suites adjacent to corridors, stairwells, elevators, and garbage shutes.
ACI provides construction recommendations for improving noise isolation between adjacent suites as well as conducts sound transmission class (STC) and impact insulation class (IIC) testing for comparison to the building code requirements and recommendations. Often, a brief review of drawings can reveal improvements that can be implemented without significant changes to the construction costs. After construction is complete, changes are often very expensive.
